What Are Wisdom Teeth?
Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars that typically emerge in the late teens or early twenties. While some people have no issues with their wisdom teeth, many experience problems due to lack of space in the jaw. This can lead to impaction, crowding, infection, or pain, making extraction necessary to prevent complications. At Southwest Center for Oral Surgery, Dr. Eric Lewis evaluates wisdom teeth to determine if removal is needed to protect your oral health and maintain proper alignment. To find out if you need wisdom tooth extraction, contact our McComb, MS office to schedule an appointment.
How Are Wisdom Teeth Removed?
Wisdom teeth removal is a surgical procedure performed under local anesthesia, IV sedation, or general anesthesia, depending on the complexity of the case. Dr. Lewis begins by making a small incision in the gum to access the tooth. If the tooth is impacted, some bone may need to be removed. In some cases, the tooth is sectioned into smaller pieces for easier extraction. Once the tooth is removed, the area is cleaned, and stitches may be placed to aid healing. The procedure typically takes between 30 – 60 minutes, and recovery involves managing swelling and discomfort over the following days.
What Are the Benefits of Wisdom Tooth Removal?
Removing wisdom teeth can prevent future dental problems and improve overall oral health. Benefits of wisdom tooth removal include:
- Preventing overcrowding and misalignment of teeth
- Reducing the risk of infections and gum disease
- Eliminating pain caused by impacted or partially erupted teeth
- Lowering the chance of cysts or damage to nearby teeth
- Improving overall oral hygiene by making teeth easier to clean
Southwest Center for Oral Surgery Reviews
I had an amazing experience. The office staff could give lessons on customer service. The entire office is spotless, and Courtney, the nurse in the back was phenomenal! 1st IV I’ve EVER had that didn’t hurt! Actually 1st one that I didn’t have to get poked multiple times!! 5stars and 2👍👍 from us! Woke up the next morning with minimal pain, feeling so much better. Dr Lewis has been a blessing for us
Very nice and friendly atmosphere 👌
Dr Lewis did a wonderful job. Diagnosed and surgically removed with no side effects. I am elderly and as uncertain how well I would do. I could not be more pleased

Getting your teeth worked on is never cheap, so chose one the best Dr Lewis. I pulled 29 teeth at one time, then scraped bone around gums so my new teeth will fit well. Never had any pain thru out whole process . Proper healing between steps , it took 10 weeks oh almost forgot I got a 500.00 discount on scrapping bone , which I had a lot of . If you want a good job done the first time I highly recommend Dr Lewis in mcomb ms .
